Alarming Surge in Gun Deaths: Unprecedented Levels and Troubling Trends

In 2021, gun deaths reached their highest level ever recorded for the second straight year. Nearly 49,000 people died from gun violence in the U.S. in 2021.  Each day, an average of 134 people died from gun violence—one death every 11 minutes. Gun homicides continued to rise in 2021, increasing 7.6% over the previous year. Gun suicides reached record levels, increasing 8.3%, the largest one-year increase recorded in over four decades. This information is outlined in the annual report “U.S. Gun Violence in 2021: An Accounting of a Public Health Crisis” published by the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions in June 2023.

Assessing Active Shooter Incidents in 2022: Decline in Frequency, Yet Heightened Impact and Evolving Threats

In the report titled “Active Shooter Incidents in the United States in 2022”, jointly authored by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in collaboration with the  Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center at Texas State University and published in April 2023, the following key findings were revealed:

In 2022, the FBI identified 50 shootings as active shooter incidents. The FBI defines an active shooter as one or more individuals actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area. The report provides an overview of data related to these incidents in the United States. The total number of casualties was 313, with 100 killed and 213 wounded.

Interestingly, the report indicates a significant development—active shooter incidents declined in 2022, marking a departure from previous years. However, it is crucial to note that despite the decline in incidents, the number of victims increased. This phenomenon can be attributed to active shooters learning from past incidents, resulting in improved planning, methodologies, and weapon choices.

The report sheds light on the evolving nature of active shooter incidents and highlights the need for ongoing efforts to effectively prevent and respond to such events.

Unveiling the Disturbing Reality: Exploring Mass Killings in America and Their Far-Reaching Impact

The USA Today in-depth article “Mass killing database: Revealing trends, details and anguish of every US event since 2006” provides an in-depth look at mass killings in the United States since 2006. The article is based on a database that tracks all mass killings in the United States, including those caused by guns, knives, fires, vehicles and other weapons. The database includes every mass killing since 2006 in which four or more people, excluding the offender, were killed within a 24-hour time frame.

According to the article, 2022 saw the second most mass killings in a year since tracking began. The number of victims was the third-highest total, only surpassed in 2017 and 2019. The article also notes that public mass shootings are only part of the story and that fatal public shootings are a small fraction of all mass killings.

The article provides detailed information on the trends and details of mass killings in the United States. It includes data on the number of mass killings by year, the number of victims killed by year, and the types of weapons used. The article also discusses the impact of mass killings on communities and provides insights from experts on how to address the issue.
